Privacy
Here's what we collect, why, and what you can do about it. Questions or requests: info@bandnamer.website.
The short version
- We keep what the app needs to work: your account, your bands, the names you pitch and your ballot.
- Band names (just the names) get sent to public music catalogs to check who's using them.
- Analytics and ad cookies are off until you turn them on, and you can turn them off again any time.
- We don't sell your data.
What we collect
Your account. Your email address, the name your bandmates see, and your password, which is stored hashed by our sign-in provider. We never see it.
Your bands. Bands you start or join, their nicknames and home country, the names you pitch and any notes on them, your top picks, your ballot, and the email addresses you invite.
Name checks. To check a name, we send the name itself to Deezer, Last.fm, MusicBrainz and Bandcamp (and Spotify, where it's switched on). Nothing about you goes with it. Results are cached by name for everyone, without recording who asked.
Technical stuff. Your IP address is used to rate-limit sign-ins and searches. Those counters live in memory and disappear when the app restarts. Our web server also keeps standard access logs.
Analytics and ads, only if you opt in. Google Analytics tells us how the app is used. Google Ads and Meta tell us which ads bring people here. These load through Google Tag Manager, which stays in its no-cookies mode until you choose otherwise.
Why we use it
- To run the app you signed up for: your account, bands, names, checks, ballots and invites.
- To keep it safe: rate limits and logs stop abuse, which is in everyone's interest.
- Analytics and ads: only with your consent.
Who sees what
Your bandmates see the names you pitch, your notes and top picks, your display name, and whether you've voted. The app shows only the combined standings, not how you ranked things. The admin of a band can also see the email addresses of pending invites.
We use a few services to run BandNamer. They handle data on our behalf:
- Supabase: database and sign-in.
- DigitalOcean: the server the app runs on.
- PurelyMail: sends invites and sign-in links.
- Google and Meta: analytics and ad measurement, only if you opt in.
Some of these are based outside your country, including in the US.
Cookies
| Cookie | Set by | What for | Type | Kept for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| sb-…-auth-token | BandNamer (Supabase) | Keeps you signed in | Essential | Until you sign out |
| bn_consent | BandNamer | Remembers your cookie choice | Essential | 6 months |
| _ga, _ga_* | Google Analytics | Counts visits and how the app is used | Analytics (opt-in) | Up to 2 years |
| _gcl_* | Google Ads | Measures which ads bring people here | Ads (opt-in) | 90 days |
| _fbp, _fbc | Meta | Measures which ads bring people here | Ads (opt-in) | 90 days |
Change your mind any time in . Turning analytics or ads off also clears the cookies they set.
How long we keep it
- Your account and band data stay until you delete them, or ask us to.
- Leaving a band (or being removed) deletes your ballot there and clears your top picks. The names you pitched stay on the list, so your bandmates' rankings don't fall apart.
- Deleting your account deletes your profile and every ballot, and takes you out of every band. Your bands carry on without you: if you were the admin, the longest-standing member takes over. The names you pitched stay on those lists with your name taken off.
- A band is deleted when its admin breaks it up, or when its last member leaves. Its names, ballots and invites go with it.
- Cached name checks contain only band names and are refreshed about once a week.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete your account. Email info@bandnamer.website and we'll sort it out. If you'd rather the names you pitched went too, say so and we'll remove them from your bands' lists. If you're in the UK or EU, you can also object to how we use your data, and complain to your data protection authority.
Changes
If this changes in a way that matters, we'll update the date at the top and, for big changes, ask for your cookie choice again. How the name check works has the details of what the checks look up.
